Ilhabela International Sailing Week resumes after July windstorm

A severe windstorm hit Ilhabela on 29 July, with gusts reported up to 125 km/h (about 60 knots) in the Canal de São Sebastião. The storm caused three deaths – a fisherman in the canal between São Sebastião and Ilhabela and two people in Rio de Janeiro – and damaged the Yacht Club of Ilhabela’s pier, which split into two sections. Three boats broke from their moorings and were rescued by Yacht Club staff.

The extreme conditions forced the cancellation of all races on 29 July. The 53rd Ilhabela International Sailing Week resumed on 30 July, with all classes returning to the canal. The Renato Frankenthal regatta on 26 July was shortened to about six nautical miles because of weak and shifting winds and currents. Barco Brasil placed second in the HPE25 class at that regatta. The Phytoervas team recorded third‑ and fifth‑place finishes in the ORC performance class on 30 July. About 130 sailboats from Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay participated, and local officials expect roughly 55 000 visitors for the event.
