Bareilly Smart City Road Collapses, Forming Deep Hole

A main road constructed under the Smart City project in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, collapsed, creating a roughly 10‑foot deep, 30‑foot wide hole. The collapse occurred about six months after the road was rebuilt following earlier sewer‑line work, and the incident blocked traffic, causing heavy jams, though no vehicle was on the section when it gave way.

Local officials, including Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar Maurya, said a blocked sewer line likely caused soil erosion that weakened the road base. Teams from the municipal water, construction, and Smart City departments secured the site, set up barricades, and began repairs while investigations continue. The event has sparked renewed criticism of construction quality and oversight in the Smart City scheme.
