Barendrecht discusses controversial asylum seeker center plans

Controversial plans for an asylum seeker center in Barendrecht have returned to the political agenda. The proposed facility, located in Zuidelijk Randpark, would provide 350 places and sits almost directly on the border of Rotterdam.

Due to its location, the center would rely on Rotterdam's Maeterlinckweg for accessibility. The Society Committee is scheduled to discuss the plans on September 21. Local council members, including Roeland Bol, Pieter Smit, and Richard Carlebur, have requested a briefing from Alderman Esther Punte to understand the current status of the dossier.

Key points for discussion include the next steps regarding the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), the municipality's capacity under the Distribution Act (Spreidingswet), and the details of the administrative agreement with the COA. Other topics include safety, enforcement, livability, and how local residents will be involved in the process.
