Bargny: Merchant Ablaye Thiam dies after jumping into canal
A 36-year-old merchant, Ablaye Thiam, died on August 3, 2026, after jumping into a canal near the Train Express Regional (TER) footbridge in Bargny, Senegal.
Thiam, who was traveling from Kaolack, had reportedly struggled with severe personal difficulties. According to statements from an acquaintance, Thiam had previously attempted to take his own life by ingesting caustic soda, locally referred to as ‘khémé’. Following that initial attempt, he was treated and placed under observation for 48 hours at the Youssou Mbargane Diop Hospital in Rufisque.
Upon arriving at the scene near the TER descent, Bargny police discovered the body with recent abrasions on the forehead and right shoulder. Authorities also recovered a travel bag containing clothing, medicine, and a medical prescription near the site.
