Bari authorities dismantle usury and extortion network

The Guardia di Finanza in Bari has executed precautionary measures against four individuals following an investigation by the Trani Prosecutor's Office. The suspects, including three in prison and one under house arrest, face charges of usury, extortion, money laundering, and unauthorized financial activity.

Investigators uncovered a network that targeted vulnerable individuals, including gambling addicts, and small business owners facing financial difficulties. In some cases, usurers provided loans ranging from 1,000 to 80,000 euros with annual interest rates between 60% and 1,260%.

The operation included the seizure of assets and cash exceeding 700,000 euros. The investigation revealed that the group used intimidation and extortion to recover funds, including instances of physical assault and forcing victims into fraudulent real estate contracts.
