Bari bids for European Capital of Small Retail 2027
On 18 May, Bari’s city hall hosted the official presentation of its candidacy for European Capital of Small Retail (Ecosr) 2027, a European Commission award that recognises cities that integrate proximity commerce into urban policy.
Mayor Vito Leccese, together with local development officials, regional economic development representatives, and heads of trade organisations, outlined the city’s “Bari program”. Initiatives cited include “Un negozio non è solo un negozio”, “Impresa Prossima”, “Bari Artigiana”, “Scuola Barese del Commercio”, and “Strade Vive”, all aimed at supporting small shops, revitalising public spaces and strengthening social ties.
The bid seeks to position Bari as a laboratory for innovative urban retail and to exchange best practices with other European municipalities.
