Bari juvenile prison riots leave officer injured

A prison officer was injured during riots at the Fornelli juvenile prison in Bari, Italy. According to the Osapp prison police union, the officer received a one-month medical prognosis following the incident.

The unrest reportedly began when a detainee manipulated a network hydrant to flood a section of the first prison group before setting fire to a cell. Other inmates allegedly refused to return to their cells, leading to clashes intended to spark a revolt. Personnel who had just finished their shifts were required to intervene to contain the situation and secure the facility.

Union representatives have called for the immediate transfer of the responsible detainees out of the region and have requested intervention from the Ministry of Justice. They are seeking disciplinary and criminal sanctions, improved security equipment, and the urgent deployment of support contingents. The union has warned of potential industrial action if immediate responses are not provided.
