Bari launches biological control to protect holm oaks
A biological control program has launched in Bari, Italy, to combat scale insects infesting local holm oaks and pine trees. The initiative began at the Iqbal Masih school within the Re David district, involving students and teachers in the release of natural predatory insects, commonly known as ladybugs.
The project is a collaborative effort between the Puglia Phytosanitary Observatory, the Municipality of Bari, and the University of Bari Aldo Moro. It aims to use specific beneficial insects from the Coccinellidae family, specifically Exochomus quadripustulatus and Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, to reduce scale insect populations and minimize the need for chemical pesticides.
The 24-month experimental program includes regular monitoring of plant health, soil and root condition improvements, water management, and targeted pruning. This intervention is part of a broader effort to address the Oak Dieback Complex (Co. Di. Que.), a phenomenon causing tree deterioration that is being studied at both regional and national levels across Italy and Europe.
