Bari port authorities detain French man for transporting Akeron missiles
Italian authorities have detained a 46-year-old French national, Regis Claude Albert Normand, at the port of Bari after discovering a shipment of military weapons in his van. The vehicle, which arrived from Patras, Greece, via the Superfast II ferry, contained five containers designed for anti-tank weapon systems.
Technical assessments by the Italian Army classified three Akeron missiles found in the shipment as weapons of war. Investigators discovered that the containers had been marked with blue bands—which under NATO standards signify inert training equipment—but these were found to be removable tape. Once removed, the missiles displayed yellow and black markings characteristic of high-explosive, armor-piercing ammunition.
One container was empty, and a second held an inert training missile lacking a guidance system, propulsion, or warhead. Normand produced international consignment notes, but authorities deemed them too vague to clarify the cargo's nature. Normand claimed he was transporting the material on behalf of MBDA France for maintenance by Altus LSA in Greece. Judge Valeria Isabella Valenzi has ordered his pre-trial detention.
