Mediterranean reports multiple migrant arrivals and environmental recovery
Multiple humanitarian and environmental incidents have been reported across the Mediterranean and Italian coasts.
In terms of migration, several arrivals have occurred: the NGO SOS Humanity vessel Humanity 1 brought 73 people, including 54 from Sudan, to Ravenna. In Ortona, the Ocean Viking landed 55 migrants. In Bari, the Emergency vessel Life Support arrived with 48 survivors, including 31 unaccompanied minors, alongside the bodies of seven individuals who died during the crossing. Emergency officials criticized the assignment of distant ports, noting it increases suffering for vulnerable people.
In environmental news, researchers from the National Research Council (CNR-IRBIM) recovered a 4-ton 'ghost net' in the Tyrrhenian Sea near Termini Imerese. The massive abandoned net, which had already trapped and killed several fish, forced the temporary suspension of the MEDIAS 2026 acoustic research campaign. Experts warned that such abandoned gear causes 'ghost fishing,' damaging marine habitats and ecosystems.
