Bari reopens first block of Via Argiro to pedestrians

The municipality of Bari has fully opened the first block of Via Argiro, between Piazza Umberto and Via Dante, to pedestrian traffic. The reopening follows a refurbishment that resurfaced the historic pavement stones, added limestone side strips and planted two rows of shrubs, part of a broader plan to transform about 14,000 m² of the commercial street into a modern, accessible rambla with 100 new trees.

Work continues on nearby intersections. After the recent reopening of the crossing with Via Abate Gimma, crews are now addressing the Via Calefati junction, and from 29 June will begin upgrades at the Via Dante crossing, installing level basoles to eliminate gaps. A temporary traffic order bans all vehicles and stops on both sides of Via Dante between Via Andrea da Bari and Via Argiro, except for construction vehicles, emergency services and traffic‑disabled vehicles. The final block and remaining intersections are slated for completion in the coming weeks.
