Bari resists Italian trend of residents moving to suburbs

Bari is bucking the national trend in Italy regarding residential real estate. While residents in major metropolitan areas like Milan and Rome are increasingly moving to the outskirts or surrounding provinces to escape high costs, Bari has seen a decrease in residents choosing to buy their first homes outside the city limits.

Data from Tecnocasa and the Agenzia delle Entrate indicates that the percentage of Bari residents purchasing property in the hinterland or other provinces fell from 24.1% in 2019 to 18.2% in 2025. This trend contrasts sharply with Milan, where out-of-city purchases rose from 35% to 53% due to a 42% increase in property prices over seven years. Bari's relative stability is attributed to more accessible average prices, currently around 1,888 euros per square meter.
