Melito Porto Salvo devastated by severe storms and flooding

Severe storms and torrential rainfall have caused widespread devastation across the Calabria region, particularly in Melito Porto Salvo and the Grecanica area. The intense weather led to significant infrastructure damage, including collapsed roads, fallen walls, and landslides. In Melito Porto Salvo, the force of the water swept several vehicles into the sea and caused flooding in residential areas. The Tiberio Evoli hospital's emergency room was temporarily inundated with mud but has since been cleared and returned to full operation following emergency cleanup efforts.

Transportation has been heavily impacted, with the closure of State Road 106 (Statale 106) in both directions between kilometers 31.30 and 31.90. In Fossato Jonico, a landslide from Mount Lungìa reached the town center, damaging parked vehicles. Local authorities, including Mayor Tito Nastasi, have described the situation as an extreme emergency and have requested a formal declaration of a natural disaster state.

Regional Civil Protection and emergency services remain active on the ground to manage debris, restore essential services, and secure hazardous areas. While no injuries have been reported, the scale of the damage to roads, utilities, and private property is still being assessed.
