Bari: Two women arrested for extortion and threats in San Pio housing

Two women have been placed under house arrest following an investigation into threats and extortion targeting residents of public housing in the San Pio district of Bari. The suspects are accused of attempted extortion using mafia-style methods, criminal damage, and aggravated theft.

According to investigators, the group allegedly attempted to prevent new tenants from occupying the properties by using intimidation and demanding money for purported work performed during previous illegal occupations. In one instance, a housing unit was severely vandalized just four days after being assigned, resulting in demolished walls and stolen fixtures.

The investigation follows the seizure of several properties in the San Pio neighborhood, some of which were reportedly linked to the Strisciuglio clan. Local officials Nicola Grasso and Michelangelo Cavone issued a joint statement praising the work of the Carabinieri and the Prosecutor's Office, asserting that the arrests validate their decision to report the intimidation and destruction of public assets.
