Bariatric surgery in Adana, Turkey improves metabolic health

Obesity rates are climbing worldwide, and Turkey ranks among the European countries with the highest prevalence. Health experts note that excess weight is linked to hypertension, blood‑sugar disorders, abnormal lipid levels and increased cardiovascular risk.

At the Başkent University Turgut Noyan Center for Application and Research in Adana, General Surgery lecturer Dr. Serkan Erkan explained that bariatric (obesity) surgery is an effective treatment option. He emphasized, “High blood pressure, blood‑sugar disorders and abnormal lipid levels are directly linked to obesity.”

According to Dr. Erkan, patients who undergo the procedure often experience a drop in blood pressure, normalization of glucose levels and a reduced risk of heart‑vascular disease. He stressed that surgery is not a standalone cure; lasting benefits require permanent dietary changes, increased physical activity and regular post‑operative medical follow‑up.
