Bariloche Declares Climate Emergency Amid Heavy Snowfall
The municipality of San Carlos de Bariloche declared a climate emergency as an intense snowstorm dumped metres of snow across the city and surrounding mountainous areas. Authorities urged residents and tourists to remain at home and avoid private‑vehicle travel except for essential trips, promoted remote work, and suspended school classes. The national airport cancelled dozens of flights and National Route 40 between Bariloche and El Bolsón was closed.
Municipal crews, the Argentine Army and other agencies launched a snow‑removal operation, distributing roughly 900 meals and sheltering about a dozen families in municipal gyms. The Argentine National Meteorological Service warned that strong snow and rain would continue at least until July 29, while provincial road services advised drivers to travel only if necessary and carry chains for the affected routes.
