Baris-Boula-Vouliagmeni pushes for Vouliagmeni's independence
The municipality of Baris‑Boula‑Vouliagmeni, which combines three distinct local units—Baris, the urban area of Boula and the coastal community of Vouliagmeni—faces divergent development needs. The mayor has criticised the lack of government action during Alexis Tsipras’s 2015‑2019 premiership, noting that the New Building Regulation (NOK) enabled excessive construction and harmed the environment.
The municipal administration has taken legal action before the Supreme Administrative Court to block the NOK and protect Vouliagmeni’s unique coastal environment. It also highlights major infrastructure projects carried out in Baris and Boula that have improved local quality of life.
The “Aristotle” plan, announced by SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, seeks to undo forced mergers imposed by the earlier Kallikratis reform, restoring autonomy to over a hundred historic municipalities. Vouliagmeni is presented as a key example where reinstating independence would strengthen local democracy and environmental protection.
The mayor emphasized that real protection of a city requires concrete actions, not slogans, and called for decisive institutional interventions to safeguard the municipality’s diverse needs.
