Barley production offers diversification potential for High Plains farmers

Barley is gaining attention as a versatile agricultural option, particularly in the U.S. High Plains where production declined in the mid-1980s. While wheat remains the dominant crop, experts suggest barley could offer producers valuable diversification.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 80% of U.S. barley production is concentrated in Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota, with Colorado ranking fourth. Agricultural producers have noted that barley is an underutilized tool that can be used for grain, hay, and grazing forage.

Agronomists highlight several economic and environmental advantages to barley cultivation. It typically requires less nitrogen than wheat, which provides a cost benefit amid rising fertilizer prices. Additionally, barley may require less water than wheat for similar seed crops and demonstrates a high tolerance for saline soils.
