Barnard College pauses international student work approvals

Barnard College has suspended new and pending Curricular Practical Training (CPT) approvals for international students. The decision follows federal memos issued in August that warned institutions could lose their certification to enroll international students if they do not implement stricter rules for work authorizations.

CPT allows students on F-1 visas to engage in off-campus practical training, such as internships, that is integrated into their academic curriculum. The Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which oversees visa compliance, issued the guidance that prompted these changes.

Other major institutions, including UCLA and UC Berkeley, have also responded to the federal guidance. UCLA is currently reviewing the requirements, while UC Berkeley has paused certain applications but will continue to process CPT necessary for degree completion.
