Barnard’s Star planets revealed as magnesium-rich rocky worlds
Astronomers have conducted a detailed study of Barnard’s Star, located less than six light-years from Earth, revealing four unusual rocky planets. These planets are smaller than Earth and Venus but larger than Mars, a size range not found in our solar system. Research from the University of Cambridge indicates the star contains high levels of magnesium, suggesting the planets are likely rich in the mineral periclase. Unlike Earth’s olivine, which helps store water, periclase is less effective at water storage. Due to their close proximity to the star and weak gravity, these planets likely lack atmospheres.
While these discoveries provide insight into planetary composition, the physical challenges of reaching such systems remain immense. Even with advanced propulsion concepts like nuclear drives or laser lightsails, traveling to the nearest stars would currently require tens of thousands of years, making interstellar missions difficult to achieve within a human lifetime.
