Barnegat Bay boat crashes kill three, officials urge safety

Two separate boating accidents occurred in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, within a week in July 2024. On July 19 a 30‑foot Tidewater Custom struck an Intercoastal Waterway channel marker, killing nine‑year‑old Mya Bella Golabek and seven‑year‑old Sigmund "Siggy" Paul Golabek. The boat was steered by their grandfather, Stephen Schneider. A second crash on July 25 involved a 32‑foot Boston Whaler that also hit a channel marker, killing 26‑year‑old Michael T. Bereheiko of Green Brook.

State Police noted that the channel markers are well marked, charted and lit, and marine officers urged boaters to reduce speed, stay within the marked channel and avoid excessive wake. Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Corporal James Scotttold said the first boat was on the wrong side of the waterway and "should have been more out to the right, out in the middle of the channel." The incidents came during the height of the summer boating season on New Jersey’s busy waterways.
