Barnes Ice Cap study suggests human activity may delay glaciation

A study of the Barnes Ice Cap on Baffin Island in northeastern Canada indicates that human-induced greenhouse gas emissions may have delayed the onset of a new ice age. Researchers identified a growth window approximately 2,000 years ago, but have observed significant ice shrinkage since 1960, with edges retreating at an average rate of four meters per year.

Because the ice is anchored to the bedrock, it serves as a clean climate archive, preserving organic remains such as moss and lichen. By combining radiocarbon dating of plant matter with beryllium-10 measurements in rocks to reconstruct former ice boundaries, scientists were able to establish a clear temporal dynamic of the ice cap's expansion and contraction.
