Barnet Hill Academy clarifies hijab policy amid state funding transition

Barnet Hill Academy, an independent Islamic faith school in north London, is set to become a state-funded voluntary-aided primary school this month following approval from the local council. The transition has drawn scrutiny regarding the school's uniform policy, which requires female pupils from the age of seven to wear hijabs.

In response to concerns, Barnet Council stated that the school has updated its website to clarify that wearing a hijab is not compulsory for non-Muslim students. The school maintains that its Islamic dress code is closely aligned with its ethos, which focuses on directing children toward Islamic values and rituals, such as congregational prayer and Quran recitation.
