UK villages protest asylum seeker housing at military bases
Several English villages are organizing symbolic independence referendums to protest Home Office plans to use former military bases for asylum seeker accommodation. Following a vote in Piddington, where residents voted overwhelmingly to secede from the UK to protest the arrival of 1,256 male migrants, the village of Barnham in Suffolk is considering a similar move.
Barnham Parish Council chairman John Bauer stated that the village seeks to raise the profile of their concerns, noting that the arrival of 1,250 asylum seekers would more than double the local population. Residents expressed fears regarding safety and the impact on their community's way of life.
In Crowborough, Sussex, protests have already occurred following the conversion of a military base into a camp for approximately 540 male migrants. Demonstrators gathered to voice opposition to the site, while counter-protesters also held rallies in support of the migrants.
