Barnham village considers symbolic independence vote over asylum seeker plans

The village of Barnham in Suffolk is considering a symbolic independence referendum to protest government plans to house asylum seekers at a nearby former RAF base. This follows a similar move by the village of Piddington in Oxfordshire, where residents recently voted overwhelmingly in favor of a symbolic secession from the United Kingdom.

Local leaders in Barnham, including Parish Council Chairman John Bauer, expressed concerns that the proposed accommodation of up to 1,256 asylum seekers would overwhelm the small community, which has fewer than 600 residents and lacks basic amenities like shops or pubs. The Home Office has identified RAF Barnham as one of three potential sites intended to accommodate a total of 3,750 migrants.

The Ministry of Defence noted that such sites are typically used only during the initial processing stage of asylum claims. While the proposed referendums hold no legal or constitutional weight, residents intend for them to serve as a high-profile method of communicating their opposition to central government decisions.
