Barnim district imposes budget freeze amid rising deficit

The Landkreis (district) Barnim in Brandenburg, Germany, has enacted a budget freeze (Haushaltssperre) for the current fiscal year. A recent financial review showed the planned deficit of roughly €30 million is expected to increase by an additional €16.3 million, bringing the total shortfall to about €46.3 million. District chief executive Daniel Kurth (SPD) warned that the district’s finances have been under severe pressure for months and said the freeze is required by law.

Authorities have ordered a halt to non‑essential spending, a hiring freeze, and the postponement of non‑urgent investments while seeking further savings. Voluntary services for citizens will not be cut immediately. The administration is also preparing a supplemental budget for 2026 and beginning work on the 2027 budget to restore financial stability.
