Germany increases traffic enforcement and school zone safety measures

Various regions in Germany are reporting increased police activity and public awareness campaigns regarding traffic safety and cycling regulations.

In Nordhorn, police conducted targeted checks on fatbikes and e-scooters, resulting in 15 administrative offenses and 13 criminal offenses. Authorities noted that fatbikes exceeding 25 km/h or using throttle grips are classified as motor vehicles, requiring insurance and potentially a driver's license.

As the school year begins, police in Oberberg, Jena, and Wunstorf have increased monitoring near schools to ensure student safety. These efforts include speed limit enforcement and managing 'parent taxis' to prevent congestion and accidents in school zones.

Regarding cycling laws, the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) clarifies that children under 8 may use sidewalks, while those aged 8 to 10 have the choice between sidewalks and bike paths. From age 10, children are prohibited from cycling on sidewalks and must use designated paths or roads.
