Barone Romeo Hospital launches cord blood transfusion program for premature infants
The Barone Romeo Hospital in Patti has launched a new clinical pathway, project BSCS-01, to provide blood transfusions for premature infants using erythrocyte concentrates derived from cord blood.
This initiative marks the first concrete collaboration in Sicily between a cord blood bank, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and a Transfusion Medicine Service from a different health authority. The project is a joint effort between the Patti NICU, the local Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine Service, and the Sciacca Regional Cord Blood Bank, located at the Giovanni Paolo II Hospital.
The ASP of Messina noted that the project aims to strengthen healthcare networks for fragile patients by integrating specialized expertise and technologies to offer safer, more advanced therapeutic options for newborns.
