Baro's Bolè sacred pond struggles to generate tourism revenue

The Bolè sacred pond in the rural commune of Baro, located in the Kouroussa prefecture, serves as a major cultural and spiritual landmark that attracts thousands of visitors annually. During the traditional festival and ritual fishing held at the end of the dry season, the site draws both national and international tourists to witness ceremonies held among legendary baobabs and giant silk-cotton trees.

Despite the high volume of visitors, local authorities report that the site fails to generate significant economic revenue for the community. Fodé Hawa Condé, the mayor of Baro, emphasized that while the commune is recognized as a tourism hub due to the pond, the economic benefits for the local population remain limited. Local officials are seeking to implement new mechanisms to better exploit the site's tourism potential and ensure the heritage provides financial benefits to the region.
