Barranquilla celebrates historic leadership milestones for women

Two women have achieved significant milestones in Barranquilla, Colombia. Alejandra Moreno Astwood, a social communicator, researcher, and former deputy of the Atlántico Assembly, will receive the International ALMA Award on October 8. Awarded by the Alianza de Líderes Mundiales and the Asociación de Municipios de México, the honor recognizes her work in gender rights, including the ‘Ruta Morada’ preventive strategy and the ‘Sello Morado’ initiative to certify good practices against gender violence.

In a separate development, Brigadier General Sandra Liliana Rodríguez Castro has become the first woman to command the Metropolitan Police of Barranquilla (MEBAR) since its establishment in 2008. A specialist in criminalistics and criminology with over 30 years of experience, Rodríguez previously commanded the Valle Police Department and the Ibagué Metropolitan Police. Her new mandate involves addressing homicide, extortion, theft, and organized crime through enhanced intelligence and criminal investigation.
