Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char unveils $17 bn police station and LED stadium upgrades

Mayor Alejandro Char announced a major security investment in Barranquilla, revealing a new mega‑police station in the Caribe Verde area. The $17 billion facility will cover 4,298 m², serve neighborhoods including Villa San Pablo, El Pueblo and Los Ángeles, and house about 60 officers to handle community policing, women’s violence, investigations and other duties.

During the same visit, Char and footballer Luis Díaz toured the Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez stadium, where a $74,000‑LED lighting system will be installed on the façade. The upgrade will allow dynamic visual displays and increase the stadium’s capacity from 43,000 to 65,000 seats, positioning the venue for larger concerts and international sporting events.
