Barranquilla Mayor announces potential IndyCar race for 2028
Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char has announced plans for an IndyCar race to take place in the Colombian city in April 2028. The proposed event would feature a 4.3-kilometer street circuit along the Gran Malecón and Vía 40, utilizing the Magdalena River as a backdrop.
While the Mayor framed the announcement as a confirmed milestone for the city's international sporting profile, IndyCar has issued a statement clarifying that any reports of a finalized contract are premature. The racing series noted that while exploratory conversations have occurred, a formal evaluation of the location has only recently begun.
Negotiations reportedly involved several intermediaries and representatives, including a visit by city officials to Indianapolis to present the proposed track design. The initiative aims to position Barranquilla as a global destination for high-level international sporting events.
