Barranquilla seeks to recover 1,000 hectares in dispute with Puerto Colombia

Barranquilla is moving toward resolving a long-standing territorial dispute with Puerto Colombia following a technical proposal by the Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazzi (IGAC). The proposal, presented to Congress, supports Barranquilla's historical position and suggests the incorporation of approximately 1,036 hectares into the district's jurisdiction.

Mayor Alejandro Char celebrated the announcement, stating that key areas such as Villa Campestre, the Corredor Universitario, and Ciudad Mallorquín will return to Barranquilla's control. The administration noted that the lack of jurisdictional clarity had previously hindered essential public works. With this change, the district plans to invest in mobility, public lighting, security, paving, and the development of parks and green spaces.

The legal basis for this shift stems from two Council of State rulings that annulled previous ordinances modifying territorial limits. The IGAC study, which covers about 1,153 hectares, uses cartographic points near Arroyo León to suggest the transfer. However, Representative Jaime Santamaría cautioned that the IGAC technical report is not yet binding and requires legislative processing through Congress.
