Barranquilla: Venezuelan woman dies after violent assault

Yudelkys Geraldine Martínez, a 41-year-old Venezuelan national, has died in Barranquilla, Colombia, following a violent assault. She passed away at the Clínica de la Costa after spending 24 days hospitalized with severe injuries.

The incident occurred on August 1 in the Porvenir neighborhood, specifically at the intersection of Calle 76 and Carrera 44. Reports indicate that Martínez was involved in a confrontation with several individuals and was allegedly struck with wooden sticks and other blunt objects. Her son initially transported her to a medical center for emergency care before she was transferred to the clinic.

Following her death, the Colombian Prosecutor's Office (Fiscalía) is expected to reclassify the investigation from personal injury to homicide. Authorities are working to identify the perpetrators and determine the motives behind the attack. Some reports have raised concerns that the incident may be a case of gender-based violence. This death adds to a rising trend of violence against women in the Atlántico department, where 56 women have been killed so far this year.
