Barrios de Luna reservoir anniversary prompts Castilla y León call for national water policy
The regional government of Castilla y León marked the 75th anniversary of the first discharge from the Barrios de Luna reservoir in León province. The ceremony was attended by Joaquín Antonio Pino, the councilor for Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Environment and Water Policy, who praised the reservoir’s role in transforming the Páramo area and supporting local agriculture.
Pino used the occasion to demand a strong national hydraulic plan, emphasizing the need for modernised irrigation, adequate storage capacity and coordinated water management across basins. He highlighted the region’s investment of more than €113 million, carried out with the central government, SEIASA and water‑users’ communities, to create digitalised, energy‑efficient irrigation networks. The councilor also underscored the contribution of the Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León and public employees in the project’s planning and execution.
