Barry Levinson to direct Elia Kazan biopic ‘A Life’

Director Barry Levinson is attached to direct ‘A Life’, a biographical film based on the 1988 memoir by legendary filmmaker Elia Kazan. Levinson co-wrote the screenplay with Jina Umakanthan, with Gene Kirkwood serving as producer.

The project aims to explore Kazan’s complex legacy, tracing his journey from a Greek immigrant to a prominent figure in Old Hollywood. The narrative is expected to cover his work with iconic actors such as Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean, while also addressing the historical tensions surrounding his 1952 cooperation with the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Levinson, known for films such as ‘Rain Man’ and ‘Diner’, expressed interest in Kazan’s engagement with human imperfection and contradiction. While Kazan’s granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, has recently been involved in adaptations of his work, there have been no reported discussions regarding her involvement in this specific production.
