Barry Marshall highlights H. pylori eradication as gastric cancer prevention

Nobel laureate Dr. Barry Marshall has stated that the early eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection could serve as a vital strategy for preventing gastric cancer. Speaking at the World Congress of Gastroenterology 2026 in New Delhi, Marshall emphasized that the bacterium should no longer be viewed solely as a cause of peptic ulcers.

Marshall noted that if the infection persists for many years, it can cause chronic stomach inflammation, significantly increasing cancer risks. He advocated for wider testing, appropriate treatment, and follow-up confirmation to ensure the infection is fully cleared. This approach aligns with recommendations from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) regarding population-based ‘screen-and-treat’ programs.

While identifying and treating infected individuals early offers a chance to prevent cancer, Marshall warned that rising antibiotic resistance is becoming a major challenge to successful eradication efforts.
