Barry Seal: The life and tragic end of the pilot in ‘American Made’

The film ‘Barry Seal - Una Storia Americana’ (American Made), directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise, depicts the true story of a TWA pilot who became deeply involved in illicit activities during the 1980s.

Recruited by the CIA for reconnaissance missions in Central and South America, Seal eventually entered into an agreement with the Medellín Cartel to transport cocaine into the United States. His activities spanned a complex web of drug trafficking and the smuggling of weapons and money to the Nicaraguan Contras as part of U.S. Cold War strategies.

The narrative concludes with Seal's downfall. After being arrested by the FBI and DEA, he agreed to cooperate with the U.S. government to avoid a long prison sentence, providing photographic evidence of the links between the Medellín Cartel and the Sandinistas. While this evidence supported the Reagan administration's political campaigns, it also made Seal a target. Following his release into community service, his predictable routine allowed a cartel assassin to locate and kill him.
