Bartın court issues sentences in Amasra child abuse case

A court in Bartın, Turkey, has issued various prison sentences in a case involving the systematic sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl in the Amasra district. The investigation began following reports that the victim was contacted and abused by individuals via social media.

In the ruling by the Bartın 2nd High Criminal Court, one defendant, A. R. Ç., received 22 years and 6 months for qualified sexual abuse and 7 years and 6 months for deprivation of liberty. Several other defendants received sentences ranging from 13 years 4 months to 16 years 8 months, with their detention continuing. Some juvenile defendants received 10-year sentences, while others under 18 were released following their sentences. Some defendants were acquitted of all charges, and others received lighter sentences for sexual harassment.

Prior to the verdict, members of the Bartın Women's Platform held a press statement outside the courthouse to demand justice and protection for children. During the demonstration, individuals identified as relatives of the defendants physically intervened against the platform members before being removed from the area. Eylem Dönertaş, representing the platform, emphasized that the court's decision serves as a message to society regarding the protection of children.
