Bartın University receives TÜBİTAK support for agricultural waste project
Bartın University (BARÜ) has received support from TÜBİTAK's 1002-A Fast Support Program for a research project focused on the sustainable processing of agricultural waste. Led by postdoctoral researcher Dr. Özge Özgürlük from the Department of Forest Industry Engineering, the project aims to transform walnut and hazelnut shells into high-value raw materials using environmentally friendly methods.
The research, titled ‘The Effect of Particle Size on the Delignification of Walnut and Hazelnut Shells with Choline Chloride-Lactic Acid-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent’, will investigate the potential of these hard-shelled wastes. The study will examine how different particle sizes affect lignin separation rates, recovery yields, and purity using a choline chloride and lactic acid-based deep eutectic solvent (DES).
Following the process, the chemical, structural, and morphological properties of the resulting cellulose-rich components and the recovered lignin will be analyzed. The findings are expected to provide a scientific foundation for improving lignin recovery processes and implementing sustainable biorefinery approaches for agricultural waste.
