KM Virgo Transport 8: Salvage operations continue in Java Sea
Search and salvage operations are underway in the Java Sea following the capsizing of the KM Virgo Transport 8. The vessel, which was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, encountered severe weather and lost contact on September 13, 2026. The ship has been confirmed to be resting on the seabed at a depth of approximately 29 meters.
As of the latest reports, nine deaths have been confirmed, including three bodies recently retrieved by divers from inside the wreck. While 108 people have been rescued, at least 126 passengers and crew members remain missing. Rescue efforts have been significantly hampered by strong currents and large waves, though authorities have begun plans to tow the vessel to shallower waters and right the hull to facilitate further recovery.
In response to the tragedy, the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is utilizing divers and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) to secure the site and collect evidence for the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) investigation. Meanwhile, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has begun distributing social security benefits to the families of deceased victims, and the ship's owner has pledged compensation and support for survivors and families.
