Basavaraj Rayareddy sparks controversy with remarks on Islam
Karnataka Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy has sparked a political controversy following remarks made during a mass marriage ceremony in Koppal district. Rayareddy described Islam as a “great,” “scientific,” and “humane” religion, stating that it is “superior to all other religions” because it begins with humanity. He also expressed a personal desire to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage, noting that he could not do so without converting to Islam.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the comments, labeling them an insult to Sanatana Dharma and the Hindu community. R. Ashoka, the BJP leader of the opposition, accused the Congress government of an “anti-Hindu mindset” and demanded that Rayareddy either apologize to the Hindu community or resign from the cabinet. The BJP has further criticized Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for his silence on the matter.
In response to the backlash, Rayareddy defended his remarks, clarifying that he did not intend to suggest any other religion is inferior. He emphasized that all religions are great and that his comments were meant to highlight the admirable values and ideals found within Islam. He maintained that discussing the merits of one faith does not constitute a denigration of others.
