Baschi residents petition for merger with Montecchio amid Terni commercial debates

In the Terni region of Italy, local administrative and commercial issues are taking center stage. Residents of several hamlets within the Municipality of Baschi—specifically Morre, Morruzze, Acqualoreto, Collelungo, and Vagli—have launched a popular petition to detach from Baschi and join the Municipality of Montecchio. The petitioners cite geographical proximity, better road connections, and more efficient access to essential services like schools, healthcare, and post offices in Montecchio as primary motivations.

Simultaneously, debates regarding urban development and commercial saturation are intensifying in Terni. Stefano Lupi, President of Confcommercio Terni, has formally cautioned the mayor against viewing every new commercial surface as a sign of prosperity. He argues that the local market is nearing saturation and that expanding large-scale retail risks the desertification of neighborhood shops, which are vital to the city's social fabric and legality.

Adding to this tension, the political group Umbria Civica has voiced strong opposition to a proposed new supermarket project on via del Centenario. The group argues that the project is based on outdated 2017 urban planning documents that fail to reflect current traffic flows and resident needs, warning that the development will exacerbate traffic congestion and harm the local economic ecosystem.
