Philadelphia Phillies claim pitcher Jose Urquidy off waivers
The Philadelphia Phillies have claimed veteran right-handed pitcher Jose Urquidy off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The move is intended to bolster the team's pitching depth during the final stretch of the season following injuries to key players.
Urquidy, a 31-year-old veteran with experience including a 2022 World Series title with the Houston Astros, joins the Phillies to provide bulk innings. While he is expected to serve as a long reliever or spot starter, he will be ineligible for the postseason as he was not in the Phillies organization by the September 1 deadline.
The roster move follows the placement of All-Star starter Jesus Luzardo on the injured list due to left shoulder inflammation. To accommodate Urquidy on the 40-man roster, the Phillies transferred Caleb Kilian to the 60-day injured list. The team also faces minor injury concerns with reliever Jonathan Bowlan, who is dealing with right groin tightness but remains on the roster to avoid losing him for a potential wild card series.
