Baseball wax packs spark nostalgia among fans

Wax packs, the original paper‑wrapped baseball card packs introduced by Topps in 1951, have become a nostalgic symbol for collectors. Owner Brian Pirrip of the collectible business M1NT describes the sensory experience of opening a wax pack – the smell of wax, gum and cardboard – as “something inherently magical” that transports people back to earlier decades.

Pirrip has taken the tradition across 47 states, recently staging a wax‑pack opening at New York Mets’ Citi Field with 1987 Topps cards, prompting excitement from fans who recognized legends such as Nolan Ryan, Don Mattingly, Roger Clemens and Kirby Puckett. The resurgence reflects a broader revival of interest in vintage baseball cards, even as modern foil wrappers dominate the market. The pieces are part of the “American Objects” series marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.
