Basel cantons impose absolute fire ban amid high wildfire risk

The cantonal authorities of Basel‑Stadt and Basel‑Landschaft announced an absolute fire ban in all forest areas and along forest edges, effective from Friday 3 July 2026. The measure follows an upgrade to fire‑danger level 4 (out of 5) driven by temperatures above 30 °C, low humidity and prolonged dry conditions that have left soils and vegetation extremely dry.

Under the ban, fires may only be kindled at least 50 metres from any forest edge. Grills, open‑flame devices, discarded cigarettes, matches and sky‑lanterns are prohibited, and existing bans on bathing, entry and fishing in the Birs river area remain in force. Authorities warned that crown fires and rapid spread are likely, especially on slopes and in windy conditions.

The prohibition will stay in effect until officials decide to lift it.
