Basel establishes itself as a global art hub

Basel, Switzerland, has evolved into a premier international destination for art and culture, supported by a network of approximately 40 museums and the renowned Art Basel fair. The city's cultural significance is rooted in centuries of history, beginning with the founding of the University of Basel in 1460 and the 1661 acquisition of the Amerbach collection, which formed the basis for one of Europe's oldest public art collections.

The city's strategic location at the intersection of Switzerland, France, and Germany has facilitated long-standing trade and cultural exchanges. Local civic engagement has also played a critical role; notably, in 1967, citizens voted to purchase two paintings by Pablo Picasso, leading the artist to later donate four additional works to the city.

In 1970, the Art Basel fair was established by gallery owners Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt. Since its inaugural edition, which hosted 110 exhibitors from 10 countries, the fair has grown into a massive global event that attracts collectors and enthusiasts to view and purchase works valued in the millions or even billions of dollars.
