Basel cooling‑tower Legionella outbreak sickens 26, kills one
Swiss health authorities have confirmed a Legionella outbreak in the city of Basel that has infected 26 people, including one fatality. Seven patients required intensive‑care treatment and the remaining 25 were hospitalized.
Investigations identified a water‑cooled cooling tower on the roof of an office building on Rebgasse in the Kleinbasel district as the most likely source. The tower’s water was found to be contaminated with Legionella pneumophila, and the facility has been shut down. Tests of ten nearby cooling‑tower installations revealed that eight exceeded the legal Legionella limits, with two towers on the office‑building roof showing especially high bacterial counts.
Authorities are conducting further inspections of other cooling towers and have ordered the decontamination of the implicated units. Residents are advised to seek medical attention if they develop respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough or shortness of breath.
