Basel-Stadt to implement digital parking permits in October 2026

Starting in October 2026, the Motor Vehicle Control Basel-Stadt will transition to digital parking permits. This shift means that permit holders will no longer need to display physical cards behind their vehicle's windshield, reducing the risk of loss.

Most license plate-related permits can be applied for and issued online, with the exception of regional commercial permits. Once the new digital system is active, permits will no longer be sent via postal mail. Instead, applicants can request invoices through email or eBill. New permits become valid only after payment is received, at which point a digital confirmation serves as proof of permit.

Currently, there are approximately 20,000 resident parking permits in Basel-Stadt and 8,000 in Riehen. Existing permits will remain valid until their scheduled expiration dates, during which time they must still be displayed physically. The authorities will first notify resident permit holders in writing before informing other permit holders of the change.
