BASF launches Green Energy Manufacturing to cut plastics carbon footprint

BASF has introduced Green Energy Manufacturing as part of its Engineering Plastics Sustainability Toolbox. The solution produces engineering plastics using renewable electricity, steam, heat and biomethane, allowing a lower Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) while keeping material properties unchanged. It is a drop‑in approach, meaning existing production lines and tools do not need modification.

The initiative helps plastics processors meet the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and reduce Scope‑3.1 emissions from purchased materials. Use cases from BOSCH and Eaton demonstrate measurable CO₂ savings and competitive cost advantages, illustrating how renewable‑energy‑based plastics can support companies’ emission‑reduction targets without costly plant retrofits.
